John Charlton RI, R.B.A., R.O.I.
(English, 1849 -1917 )

A well-known painter of horses, Charlton first studied under his father, then under W.B. Scott at the Newcastle School of Art and also at the South Kensington. In 1897 Queen Victoria commissioned him to paint the Jubilee procession and several other state occasions. He was known for portrait, sporting and military subjects, particularly battles. He illustrated a number of books and for Graphic Magazine.

He exhibited a total of 82 paintings at the Royal Academy from 1870 to 1917. He was a member of the Royal British Academy in 1882, as well as a member of the society of British Artists, and the Institute of Painters in Oil-Colours.
