Charles Van den Eycken
(Belgian, 1859 -1923 )

Also known as Charles Duchene, van den Eycken was a pupil of the Belgian Realist painter, Joseph Stevens. He is primarily known for his painterly depictions of dogs and cats in interiors. The animals in his work rarely pose as if for a portrait, but are active participants in a scene, relating to one another and to their environment. Dogs chase cats, perform in circuses, play tug-of-war or simply peer quizzically at turtles, butterflies or unidentified crustaceans.

Van den Eycken exhibited regularly at the Salon in Brussels as well as in Liege, Ghent, Antwerp, Holland, Germany and Spain. He also painted several paintings for Queen Marie-Henriette of Belgium. His work can be seen in museums around Belgium. He was very popular during his lifetime and he was widely collected. His work can be seen in museums around Belgium.
